Slovakia launches first renewables auction

The ceiling price for wind and solar has been set at €84.98 / MWh. Around 30 MW of installed power should be allocated through this procurement exercise. Solar projects ranging in size from 500 kW to 2 MW will be entitled to participate.

Slovakia’s Ministry of Economy has launched the country’s first technology neutral auction for large-scale renewable energy projects.

Through this first pilot auction, the Slovak government aims to allocate 30 MW of power generation capacity from renewable sources. Selected projects will be awarded feed-in premium payments on top of the wholesale electricity price over a 15-year period.

For solar PV, projects may have a power range of 100 kW to 2 MW, while for other renewable energy technologies the size may be between 500 KW and 10 MW.

The ceiling price for wind and solar has been set at €84.98 / MWh and that of other technologies is €106.80 / MWh.

Interested developers will have time until April 30 to submit their bids.

Slovakia’s state-owned energy company Slovenský plynárenský priemysel (SPP) will be the sole buyer of electricity produced.

The auction is part of new clean energy and co-generation support scheme – introduced by an amendment to the Act on Support of Renewable Energy Sources and High Efficiency Combined Heat and Power (Act No. 309/2009 Coll) – at the end of last year.

Slovakia has witnessed only a limited increase in residential and commercial installations in the last year as large scale solar has dried up completely.
