Comparison: SunModo’s new NanoMount vs. EZ Roof Mount and SoloFlash

NanoMount vs soloflash

SunModo (this month’s sponsor) has the most comprehensive collection of solar mounting and racking solutions, from residential rooftops to large-scale ground-mounts to carports and everything in between. Choosing among them can be daunting. For example, on residential shingle roofs, there is the EZ Roof Mount, which is a best seller, that is now being paired with the new SoloFlash. But then there is the innovative new NanoMount. Why choose one over the other? Could depend on the application or your personal preferences. Let’s compare and contrast.

NanoMount

K50044-BK1 Nano Rafter Mount

The NanoMount has an Integrated Silicone Ultra Soft Weather Sealing gasket on the bottom that conforms to the roof. There are no pre-punched holes in the gasket (more on this in a minute). The Lag creates a rotational seal with the gasket, with a sealing washer preventing water penetration from above. SunModo recommends putting a bead of sealant on the bottom of the mount as an extra precaution – but the high performance gasket means NanoMount is not reliant solely upon user-applied sealant for protection. Both rafter and deck attachments are available so NanoMount has the flexibility to cover a wide range of scenarios and preferences.

The giant silicone gasket covers the entire bottom of the mount and is recessed to ensure proper compression. The Ultra Soft material conforms to uneven roof surfaces. Again, there are no pre-punched holes, so the gasket seals around lag/screw.

NanoMount Benefits

• The fastest attachment solution on the market

• No need to pry shingles to slide flashing under the upper course of shingles

• The only comp roof attachment on the market that has only 2 components – NanoMount & Lag with sealing washer (Rafter version)

• High-Velocity Hurricane Zone Approved, passing the TAS 100 (a) Wind-Driven Rain Test.

Preventing damage to shingles is a big key, and NanoMount does not require disturbing any shingles. With NanoMount, there is no need to pop nails and damage shingles to slide flashing. This means no breaking of brittle shingles during cold weather installs or tearing of soft shingles on hot days.

A point of emphasis for SunModo is that all materials are compatible with composite shingles. The gasket material is Silicone. SunModo’s research indicated that EPDM gaskets cause a chemical reaction with comp shingles that will eat into the roof over time.

EZ Roof Mount w/ SoloFlash

soloflash

SunModo’s best-selling EZ Roof Mount is an industry standard for PV system mounting on any composite shingle roof but is now being paired with the recently introduced SoloFlash. The mount consists of only three components and is installed onto the roof in just three easy steps. The SoloFlash is a more conventional flashing, if that’s what you’re used to, but it has some smart tweaks.

SoloFlash is an economical flashing that prevents water penetration with 6 levels of protection and only requires one tool for assembly. The L foot has A 360-degree positioning and serrated surfaces on both sides for rail mounting. The flashing design is cone shaped to divert water from the roof penetration. A stamped emboss feature stiffens the flashing to minimize the bending. Alignment markers are also a handy feature.

Both products are High-Velocity Hurricane Zone Approved, passing the TAS 100 (a) Wind-Driven Rain Test.

SMA America explains ShadeFix, its new smart PV optimization strategy

Today on The Pitch we discuss some new developments in the standardization of solar inverter communication and the impact it will have. SMA America’s Director of Marketing Brad Dore gives a brief overview of the work of the SunSpec Alliance in creating new standards for solar inverters to comply with the rapid shutdown requirements of NEC 2017 690.12. Then he explains how emerging technology certified to this standard, like SMA’s new ShadeFix, could exceed NEC 2017 in both safety and reliability.

SMA and the SunSpec Alliance will be getting more in-depth on the info in the video in a Solar Builder webinar on July 9. You can sign up for free here.

As Dore explains at the 3:30 mark:

“If you look at current model out there for traditional optimization, it’s kind of like working in four wheel drive all the time. With SMA, through the model with ShadeFix optimization in our certified shutdown device, is really more on demand four wheel drive. We’re able to eliminate the fuel penalty that you get in traditional optimization, which is constantly boosting and bucking voltage, creating heat, wear and tear, and we are able to do that selectively so you can reduce that wear and tear on a system while producing more power.”

Longi launches 540-Watt Hi-MO5 module

The Chinese manufacturer has debuted two models in the new bifacial, double-glass series to join the scramble for a slice of the 500 W-plus market and to stake its claim to have the 182mm, M10 wafer adopted as the industry standard.

Chinese solar wafer and panel manufacturer Longi Solar today launched its latest ultra-high power product: the Hi-MO5 PV module.

The company has opted to base the product on the 182mm2 M10 wafer which it aims to make the industry standard.

There are two models of the new bifacial panel, with Longi claiming power output of 540 W from the 72-cell product and 495 W from the 66-cell offering.

The manufacturer said the panels were made with its innovative ‘smart welding’ technique to secure interconnection between cells, improving efficiency 0.3% compared to standard multiple-busbar products and reducing cell tensile force 20%.

The double-glass, framed Hi-MO5 is strong enough for any terrain and climate, according to Longi, and the product uses a 13 A working current, keeping it within the range of new-generation inverters, the company added.

Longi said the Hi-MO5 measures 2,256 x 1,133mm, making it compatible with 1P and 2P trackers.

The monocrystalline manufacturer said it will have 12 GW of production capacity by the final three months of this year, with further production facilities due to come online in the following quarter.

The technical manual for the Hi-MO5 has been made available by the company for download.

Meet PWRzone: Generac’s solution for simplifying, optimizing, solar PV installations

Something we touched on in our Solar Distancing series with Generac Power Systems is now being rolled out: PWRzone. Here is that initial discussion:

Generac is calling PWRzone a total system innovation that is a more efficient approach to PV system design and optimization, using fewer complex components than module level power electronics (MLPEs). PWRzone reduces the number of connections that must be made on the roof, which also reduces the chance for faulty connections. Because PWRzone uses fewer components and less energy, more solar energy is available to the system owner.

A dynamic MPPT efficiency test showed Generac PV Link maintains greater than 99.37% with a calculated average of 99.7%. This high calculated average is possibly attributed to the speed of execution of PWRzone’s MPPT algorithm.

Solar’s Fastest Attachment
Damaging roof shingles used to be one of solar installers’ worst challenges. Now, the easy, affordable solution is NanoMount™, SunModo’s newest solar mounting innovation. Learn more here.

“We saw an opportunity to simplify and improve a complex system for installers and homeowners alike,” said Russ Minick, Chief Marketing Officer for Generac. “PWRzone creates a cost savings for the installer and a power savings to the system owner. As the clean energy market grows, PWRzone will enable installers to tackle more installations and allow more homeowners to harness clean energy to power their homes and lives.

PWRzone explained

Generac PWRzone

A PWRzone is a customizable sub-array composed of standard solar modules, PV Links — which is Generac’s 2500W optimizer — and SnapRS, a rapid shutdown switch, where required. The PWRzone architecture allows installers to quickly install by roof conditions and facets. PWRzone gives you the efficiency of a string optimization approach but also the ability to maximize production in all shading scenarios. Installers can put as many as nine PV modules on a single optimizer or as few as two.

“We observed that the straight string approach performs better than MLPE in sunny and mostly sunny conditions, while MLPE performs better in significantly shaded installations,”  Minick says. “We decided to make a system that delivers the best of both approaches. That is PWRzone. It is innovative, it is simply a better way.”

PWRzone adds an element of simplicity when designing solar for Generac PWRcell and is a big next step for Generac’s Clean Energy business and product lineup.

LG solar indian wells home

Solar contractor Planet Solar Inc. has named LG Electronics as the exclusive solar panel provider for the Huntley Indian Wells community, the first new residential project in Indian Wells, Calif., in 12 years. Planet Solar was awarded the 18-unit residential project near Palm Springs and will serve as the solar contractor for the neighborhood.

For the multi-phase project, Planet Solar sought a manufacturer that could provide panels with an all-black, sleek appearance, high efficiency and long-term reliability, all of which aligned with LG’s solar offerings. Every new home will be outfitted with LG NeON 2 Black 335-350W solar panels along with an inverter.

Project details

Solar’s Fastest Attachment
Damaging roof shingles used to be one of solar installers’ worst challenges. Now, the easy, affordable solution is NanoMount™, SunModo’s newest solar mounting innovation. Learn more here.

The Huntley Indian Wells community is being built in three phases, each composed of six homes. Homebuyers will meet with Planet Solar representatives to customize their solar system size, based upon expected residency and specific needs such as electric vehicles. All homes will be pre-wired for solar energy during construction; which enables the installation process to be seamless and efficient. This will also allow the installer to meet Title 24 standards and potentially provide enough electricity to meet the homeowner’s estimated annual power needs. With move-in dates expected to take place within the next year, the construction for the first phase is being finalized. Roof installations will be the last step in the construction process.

LG’s solar panels offer a high level of performance and array design flexibility thanks to LG’s innovative Cello Technology, which uses 12 thin, circular wires in each cell to create more pathways for electrons and scatter light more effectively within the cells. LG’s NeON 2 Black solar panels also have a low degradation rate guaranteeing 90.08% of labeled power output at year 25.

These panels are produced in LG’s new solar factory in Huntsville, Ala as well as in South Korea.
