Sunrun installs record capacity in Q4 while cutting customer acquisition costs

The largest residential solar company in the United States installed 117 MW in the fourth quarter and reached a total customer base of 285,000 – all while bringing creation costs lower than they have ever been.

From PV magazine USA

The fourth quarter of 2019 was another successful one for Sunrun, the largest residential solar company in the United States – building on an already strong 2019.

The company reported 117 MW of installations in the fourth quarter, representing a 9% increase over the 107 MW installed in the third quarter of 2019. In total, Sunrun installed 413 MW in 2019, up from 373 MW 2018 and good for an 11% increase year-over-year.

The company also increased its total customer base to 285,000 in the fourth quarter. This was driven by the addition of 52,000 customers in 2019 – a growth rate of 22% year-over-year.

As for revenue, Sunrun ran into the same issue that has plagued residential solar companies: Expenses outweigh income in the pursuit of long-term value. In the fourth quarter, Sunrun increased revenue to $243.9 million, up $3.8 million (2%) from in the fourth quarter of 2018. With this revenue came quarterly operating expenses of $292.4 million, an increase of 18% in comparison to 2018.

On the year, the company reported $858.6 million in total revenue, which represents a 13% increase from 2018’s $760 million. But as was the case in the fourth quarter, Sunrun experienced $1,074.3 million in operating expenses on the year, which is up 22% from 2018.

Note that operating expenses are rising alongside a decreasing “creation costs” for systems financed by Sunrun. This number represents the per-watt cost the company incurs for each new system installed, so long as Sunrun finances said system.

Sales and marketing expenses fell for the second consecutive quarter to $0.69/watt in the fourth quarter, representing a steady decrease from the $0.77/watt cost the company reported after the second quarter of 2019. Installation costs fell an impressive $0.234 year on year – a figure equivalent to total installation cost decreases from 2017 to 2019.

Looking forward

Regardless of operating losses – the bane of residential solar companies nationwide – Sunrun anticipates even more growth in 2020. The company expects deployments to grow 15% year-over-year, with 20% growth in the overall customer base.

A portion of this confidence comes from the company’s drastically decreasing inspection time for new installations. Sunrun has begun to utilize onsite drone inspections for new installations, which has resulted in a 50% decrease in total inspection time. In tandem, Sunrun has also made strides in decreasing the time between contract closing and system installation, boasting five-day and two-day margins between signing and installation completion on projects in the fourth quarter.

As for coronavirus-related hardware shortage concerns, Sunrun has none, with company representatives sharing that enough hardware was safe-harbored leading up to the 2020 investment tax credit reduction to cover any potential shortages.

RPCS, Total Power Strengthen Solar Partnership in Arkansas

RP Construction Services Inc. (RPCS), a solar tracker project design, engineering and installation subcontractor based in Monterey, Calif., says it has strengthened its partnership with electric cooperative subsidiary Today’s Power Inc. (TPI) with their 2020 portfolio of solar projects to be built in TPI’s home state of Arkansas.

The projects, totaling more than 5 MW DC, will be supplied and installed in partnership with RPCS. All will feature DuraTrack HZ v3 single-axis solar trackers by Array Technologies. Array’s mounting technology keeps the modules following the sun on its course throughout the day, ensuring up to a 20 to 25% increase in energy production over fixed-tilt systems.

Today’s Power, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Little Rock-based utility service cooperative Arkansas Electric Cooperatives Inc. (AECI), will receive RPCS’s turnkey service and support throughout the design and installation processes.

“It has been a great pleasure to work with Today’s Power,” says Patty Thornton, sales director at RPCS.

“The knowledge they bring to the table coupled with the speed and accuracy that they complete the projects is beyond a five-star rating.  RPCS is looking forward to building on the partnership we established in 2019,” she adds.

The newly established 2020 pipeline comes in the wake of recently completed projects built under the RPCS-TPI partnership, including the Fayetteville East and Fayetteville West projects in Fayetteville, Ark., totaling over 11 MW. These TPI projects include the first solar-coupled battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Mid-South and the largest solar array on municipal land in Arkansas.

Other projects, namely those for the City of Paris, Ark., and for Southland Gin, a cotton gin, will soon be underway and are expected to be completed in the spring and summer, respectively, of 2020. The 1 MW Southland Gin project, which will be owned and operated by Today’s Power, will consist in part of a DuraTrack HZ v3 single-axis tracking system. The array will also feature on-site battery storage, using battery backups for power savings during peak demand, reducing the load on the overall system.

RPCS’s team specializes in site layout optimization, ancillary engineering services, tracker and foundation procurement, and complete mechanical installation. With more than 360 projects and 1 GW completed throughout the U.S., RPCS’s experience in the ground mount utility and distributed generation market ensures reliable support at every step of the project, notes the company.

Where to Get Expert Advice On Going Solar

buying_solar

Buying solar can unfortunately be a bit too much like buying a car. By which I mean while it can seem that picking the best item for you can seem very simple (leather or upholstery?), it actually can become very complex (what’s the difference between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive anyway?). And in fact, solar…  Read the entire post »

Trina Solar launches 500 W High-Power PV Modules

Trina Solar Co. Ltd., a global provider of integrated PV modules and smart energy solutions, says it has unveiled its latest Duomax V bifacial double-glass modules and Tallmax V back sheet.

Based on the 210 mm large-size silicon wafer and monocrystalline PERC cell, the new modules come replete with several innovative design features allowing high power output of more than 500 W and module efficiency up to 21%.

According to preliminary estimates from large-scale ground-mounted power stations in China’s Heilongjiang province, compared with conventional 410 W bifacial double-glass modules, the 500 W Duomax V can reduce the balance-of-system (BOS) cost by 6 to 8% and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) by 3 to 4%. Trina Solar will formally start accepting orders in the second quarter of 2020 and is set to achieve mass production in the third quarter, with production capacity expected to exceed 5 GW by the end of the year.

“Trina Solar has accumulated decades of experience in module design and manufacturing. We hope to drive the standardization of modules through our design and manufacturing advantages, which will not only benefit many segments in the industrial chain but also enhances the design commonality of modules on the system side,” says Yin Rongfang, vice general manager and executive vice president of Trina Solar.

“In addition to the product itself, a good module requires consideration of its matching capability with existing systems. Thanks to Trina Solar’s experience in tracking systems, integrated solution and ground power station projects, we explored and solved the potential challenges that could arise in the practical application of the system early in the research and development stage,” he adds.

Based on its multi-busbar technology, Trina Solar’s research and development team has introduced an innovative design that integrates advanced three-piece, non-destructive cutting and high-density packaging technologies. This further reduces the resistance loss and significantly improves the anti-cracking, anti-hot spot performance of the modules while maximizing space utilization.

In addition, the unique design of the modules ensures that the output current, open-circuit voltage and mechanical load of the modules comply with relevant downstream technical safety specifications and can seamlessly connect with the existing mainstream PV system design. At the launch event, Trina Solar signed strategic cooperation agreements with POWERCHINA Jiangxi Electric Power Construction, China Energy Engineering Investment’s Heilongjiang branch, Shouguang Power Investment Haobang New Energy, SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction and other power generation-related firms, preparing for the full deployment of ultra-high-power modules in the terminal market.
