Details on a new solar roofing system debuting at the 2020 International Roofing Expo

F-Wave_Logo_Vert

F-Wave LLC, a roofing provider founded by roofing industry veterans in search of a better shingle, is looking to innovate the solar roof in the same way. The Texas-based company is introducing its new REVIA Hybrid Solar Roof Tiles at the International Roofing Expo Feb. 4-6, and the company is making some bold claims about its performance. We have reached to learn more and will update this post when we do, but here is what we know from the press release.

F-Wave has developed its Hybrid tile to provide a cost-effective Net Zero Energy House. They are designed to install easily, eliminating the need for specialized labor and tools. F-Wave’s patented manufacturing processes and its proprietary blend of engineered polymers deliver durability and all-weather performance.

The REVIA Hybrid Solar Roof Tiles will harvest both photovoltaic and thermal energy. Because of that dual purpose, F-Wave says its Hybrid tiles are up to 40% efficient. “The energy generated mirrors the energy demand of typical homes across the USA, which require one-third electrical and two-thirds thermal energy with the majority of the thermal energy consumed for hot water and space heating,” the company notes.

The patented Hybrid Thermal system supplies heated air from between the roof surface and the roofing underlayment into F-Wave’s proprietary heat exchanger. The system includes both an air-to-water passive heat exchanger and an air-to-water heat pump providing the home with highly efficient hot water, space heating and cooling.

This system also significantly increases the home’s total efficiency by reducing the thermal load from the sun. The thermal system achieves a Coefficient of Performance of up to 29 for space heating and 19 for passive water heating. Summer and winter modes operate automatically or can be easily adjusted by the home owner via a smart thermostat or its own iOS or Android App.

The PV part of the Hybrid photovoltaic system is F-Wave’s own lightweight, flexible, thin film silicon solar cells, suitable for south, east and west facing roof surfaces. F-Wave points to the cell’s superior temperature tolerance as a big key, so that the tiles maintain their efficiency during hot summer months.

The electrical wiring and connectors are pre-mounted, color coded and polarity exclusive. F-Wave says this system enables the roofing contractor to complete the roof installation without the need for an electrical contractor on the roof.

F-Wave’s electrical system optimizes power output from both large and small roof surfaces by using one microinverter to control up to 30 tiles at less than 60 volts, which in turn makes the system intrinsically safe.

Complementary non-photovoltaic Hybrid tiles are also part of the system. These non-photovoltaic tiles can be easily cut to length or shape on site using a standard craft knife. All tiles can be either screwed or nailed to the decking.

A record-breaking quarter for Tesla energy storage and an improvement in solar

The internet’s favorite energy company installed 530 megawatt-hours of battery storage in Q4, beating out the previous record, set last quarter, as well as showing continued improvement in solar installations.

From pv magazine USA.

Building on a successful and uncharacteristically transparent third quarter, Tesla has reported even greater installation figures across solar and storage.

The company installed 530 MWh of energy storage in Q4 2019, beating out last quarter’s record mark of 477 MWh by 11% and delivering on Q3’s expectation that that record would be short-lived.

Tesla also installed 54 MW of solar in Q4, up 26% from Q3’s 43 MW and the highest mark since Q4 of 2018, when 73 MW were installed. Year-over-year, storage installations are up 126%, while overall solar installations are down 26%. To add further perspective, the company deployed 93 MW of solar in Q3 2018, so while the rebound is speeding up, the company has not quite caught up to where it was.

The early portion of the call was dominated by Elon Musk’s admiration for the Tesla Cybertruck, saying that, in regards to demand for the vehicle, “We’ve never seen anything like it.”

Musk also shared that the company is seeing “exponential demand” in regards to how the California home solar mandate is affecting solar roof sales prospects, though he did follow that up by saying that it’s difficult to estimate figures.

“It’s the future we want”

The company also shared that it’s hiring at the Buffalo Gigafactory, which produces the solar roof tiles. Outside of excitement, there was little said about the solar roof, with the report focusing on Tesla’s efforts to partner with roofing companies, allowing them to perform the installation.

Energy storage was not the only sector where Tesla broke newly-set records. The company delivered 112,000 vehicles in Q4, beating the previous record of 97,000 set in Q3 2019 by 14%. In fact, demand was so high that finished vehicle inventory levels reached just 11 days of sales at the end of Q4, meaning demand is closer to supply than it has ever been. The company also shared that it is already expanding its Shanghai Gigafactory, as Model Y demand projections continue to grow.

This expansion will have to wait at least a week, as the company has been forced to temporarily shut down the Shanghai Gigafactory due to the Corona Virus outbreak.

And thus a strong quarter for the most dramatic company in energy closes out a year of growth, one marked by growth in the three phases of solar, storage and EV in its back half. Growth in all three phases was not something the company had seen in quite some time prior to Q3 2019, let alone in consecutive quarters.

Musk made it a point to highlight his excitement:

“We’re super fired-up about where Tesla will be in the next 10 years.”

The panel in red

Italian manufacturer Sunerg has developed a solar module for BIPV applications which is said to offer a wide range of options to better match the architectural vision and the design of a building. The 275 kW monocrystalline PERC panel is available in mahogany brown, reddish brown, bottle green and black-grey.

Italian solar manufacturer Sunerg has developed a BIPV monocrystalline panel suitable for residential projects on rooftops and facades in a range of different colors.

The Sunerg X – Color module, which is produced in a standard size of 275 W with an aluminum frame and backsheet in the chosen color, is available in mahogany brown, reddish brown, bottle green and black-grey. These colors, according to the manufacturer, offer a wide range of options to better match the architectural vision and the design of a building.

“The PERC module was created for a niche BIPV market, in which blue polycrystalline or black monocrystalline modules can not satisfy aesthetics requirements,” the company’s CEO, Luciano Lauri, told pv magazine. “It is also possible to have frames, clamps, and cable box colored in order to achieve better aesthetics and a seamless integration.”

Furthermore, the company offers the possibility to add dummy modules with the same colored glass, frame and backsheet that can be attached to the building envelope and adjusted to the size and dimension of the roof.

For rooftop applications, the module is available in two versions: a fully building integrated panel or a partially integrated module through a “floating architectonic structure” on top of the roof with waterproof asphalt roofing underneath.

Around 52 kW of these modules in reddish brown color were recently installed with the second approach in a residential building in Copenhagen, Denmark. “In a first step, the existing cover and wooden rails were removed and a waterproof of 2-layers asphalt roofing was laid on top of the ceiling,” Lauri said. “Then, a metal hook was fixed to support the aluminum rails and the rail structure was mounted. Wiring, cable trays and cable boxes were installed and the panels were fixed to the aluminum rails with clamps.”

Sunerg added that the reddish brown color of the modules do not perfectly match the surrounding red tile roofs in the Danish project, but it explained that a lighter red color would reduce the efficiency to 240-250 W.

Lauri admitted that these modules are not as efficient as traditional monocrystalline modules, due to the extra color coating layer on the glass. He stressed, however, that their efficiency can match that of polycrystalline panels. “The module price is around 50% higher than standard mono modules,” he also said.

The durability and maintenance costs of PV systems with Sunerg colored modules are similar to those of a normal passive glass façade, Sunerg CEO further explained.
