Discover AES, Sol-Ark Partner on LiFePO4 Battery Communication

Discover Battery and Sol-Ark have implemented a closed-loop communication between Discover Advanced Energy System (AES) LiFePO4 and Sol-Ark 12K and 8K Hybrid All-In-One inverter systems over CANBus using a LYNK Solar Gateway.

In addition to remote reporting of state-of-charge (SOC) and system-level status through Sol-Ark’s web monitoring services, closed-loop communication allows the AES battery management system (BMS) to optimize Sol-Ark’s charge parameters to extend battery service life and reduce recharge times by over 25% when compared to other lithium solutions.

The Discover AES communicates accurate SOC, historical and real-time status information that Sol-Ark’s networked hardware can read and react to. The AES BMS is also able to take over and control all aspects of charging based on many conditions.

“Solar installers can offer their customers a true system solution, one that finally demonstrates the potential for advanced lithium energy storage when used in modern grid-connected and off-grid applications,” says David Norman, vice-president of Discover Battery.

“We can improve recharge times by nearly a third over other lithium batteries with the same capacity while reducing the use of generators, saving money on diesel fuel and increasing useable power harvested from any solar array,” he adds.

Direct Solar of America Enters LOI to Acquire Standard Eco Solar

SinglePoint Inc. says its majority-owned subsidiary, Direct Solar of America LLC, has entered into a letter of intent (LOI) to acquire Standard Eco Solar, a developer and installer of grid-tied solar electric systems in Texas, Illinois and Arizona for a combination of cash and stock.

Direct Solar and SinglePoint are currently conducting due diligence and SinglePoint will issue common stock once the definitive agreement and audit are completed, facilitating this investment through Direct Solar of America. The transaction is expected to close no later than December. Standard Eco achieved unaudited revenues of $12,331,703 in 2018 and $11,345,061 in 2019 and was operationally profitable in both years.

“We are excited to have entered into this LOI and to begin the work necessary to complete this important acquisition. We believe this is an important first step forward for Direct Solar in achieving the goal of being the premier national residential and commercial solar provider,” says Pablo Diaz, CEO of Direct Solar of America.

“We look forward to reaching a definitive agreement and to add the experienced management and financial strength that comes with this acquisition, as we work to build significant long-term value within our business and for the SinglePoint shareholders,” he adds.

This is the first acquisition from the recently announced national solar expansion through targeted business acquisitions for SinglePoint and Direct Solar. This intended acquisition will broaden the combined service offering expertise and increase the revenue base in addition to expanding gross profits.

Standard Eco represents an ideal acquisition that is well-positioned to leverage and complement the sales and customer acquisition platform built by Direct Solar that has recently expanded its nearly national footprint to cover 34 states where Standard Eco currently operates. Direct Solar intends to use this potential transaction, when completed, as a catalyst for its recently announced national solar installation strategy.

Deloitte abandons Chinese solar company SFCE because of going-concern fears

The auditor cited the threat posed to the debt saddled business as the reason for resigning its role, effective from today.

Debt-saddled Chinese solar developer SFCE has lost its auditor, it announced to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange today.

A statement by the developer, which said Deloitte “confirmed that there are no matters that need to be brought to the attention of the shareholders of the company,” is unlikely to mollify investors given the reason cited for Deloitte’s resignation in today’s brief update.

SFCE said the London-based auditor had walked away, with effect from today “due to the professional risk associated with the multiple uncertainties [which] exist relating to [the] going concern of the [SFCE] group and the level of audit fees.”

The latest setback is another reminder of the mountain of debt piling up at SFCE, formerly known as Shunfeng International.

Last month, SFCE admitted it could not guarantee receipt of a more-than-60% slice of the monies expected from a fire sale of 140 MW of solar project capacity in Xinjiang. The company said it had been unable to structure the sale such that it could withdraw if the purchaser – the Zhejiang Zhengtai New Energy Development Co Ltd subsidiary of Zhejiang Chint Electronics – failed to pay the RMB288 million (US$41 million) owed by the solar project companies to SFCE on top of the RMB181 million asking price.

SFCE said Belgian-based BDO Limited would replace Deloitte as its auditor.

Texan utility tenders 900 MW of solar, 50 MW of storage

CPS Energy has taken the first step towards bringing those volumes – plus 500 MW of firming capacity – to the Lone Star State in pursuit of the power company’s 50%-renewables-by-2040 goal.

Almost 1 GW of solar could be coming to San Antonio as municipal utility CPS Energy has published a request for information to inform a planned request for proposal (RFP) the company says will bring an “historic” amount of renewable energy to its generation portfolio.

The early-stage documents and corresponding procurement figures are part of CPS’ ‘Flexible Path’ vision, which includes achieving 50% generation from renewables by 2040. The request for information has been dubbed the, grammatically challenging ‘FlexPOWER Bundle.’

CPS said the resulting RFP will seek to add up to 900 MW of solar generation capacity, 50 MW of battery storage and 500 MW of “new technology solutions.” Those resources are being brought on-line not only in pursuit of the 50% goal, but to supplement 1.7 GW of aging generation capacity.

The standout figure is the 900 MW of solar capacity – a considerable level of procurement for a single utility in just one RFP. As interesting, however, is the disparity between the planned solar capacity additions and storage volume. Gunning for just 50 MW of storage capacity would add up to a curious 18:1 ratio of solar generation and energy storage.

The 500 MW of new technology solutions referenced by CPS will be reserved for firming capacity, which could mean anything from additional battery storage to new peaking gas plants or pumped hydro storage. Considering CPS’ location in Texas, though, that last option appears exceedingly unlikely.

The planned RFI marks another massive solar expansion in Texas, a state undergoing a rapid boom in renewables development. The Lone Star State is home to roughly 4.6 GW of installed capacity, the fifth largest state figure in the nation. That number is expected to rise dramatically over the next five years too, with trade body the Solar Energy Industries Association predicting Texas will add 14,466 MW over that time, good for second in the U.S. With singular RFPs like this one representing 20% of installed capacity in one of the stronger solar markets in the country, that 14 GW benchmark is beginning to appear realistic, rather than simply ambitious.
