ADB to provide $451 million to strengthen grid in southern India

The funds will be used to build an extra-high-voltage transmission link to transmit 9 GW of capacity, including 6 GW of renewables, to the Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor by 2025.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Indian government have signed a $451 million loan agreement to strengthen power connectivity between the southern and northern parts of the Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The state government aims to develop the northern Chennai–Tiruchirappalli area of the Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor as a manufacturing center. It will also target the relatively poor southern Madurai–Thoothukudi area for renewables development because of the local wind and solar resources.

The Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor is part of the East Coast Economic Corridor, in which the ADB is the Indian government’s lead development partner.

“The project will help government of Tamil Nadu meet the increasing demand for power supply from industry and commercial enterprises in the state through transfer of power from new generation facilities, including renewable energy, in the southern Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor to the industrial hubs in the state’s northern region,” said Sameer Kumar Khare, an official from India’s Ministry of Finance.

The installation will also build the operational capacity of state-owned Tamil Nadu Transmission Corp. To support this, the ADB has also approved a complementary technical assistance grant of $650,000.

Australia’s 1414 Degrees to supply abandoned Aurora CSP site with PV, thermal storage

Adelaide-based storage specialist 1414 Degrees has announced plans to acquire SolarReserve Australia II, which owns the Aurora Solar Energy Project in South Australia and two other PV projects in the state of New South Wales. The company wants to use the Aurora site to build a massive 400 MW solar farm with several thousand megawatt-hours of thermal storage capacity.

Plans for electricity generation at the Aurora concentrated solar power (CSP) project site have been rekindled by Adelaide-based thermal energy storage company 1414 Degrees. The 150 MW Aurora plant, billed as the world’s biggest, ground to a halt earlier this year after U.S. developer SolarReserve struggled to secure financing.

On Friday, 1414 Degrees announced plans to acquire SolarReserve Australia II, which owns the Aurora project in South Australia and two more solar sites in New South Wales. The company’s plan is to refocus the Aurora site and build up to 400 MW of solar PV coupled with a grid-scale thermal energy storage system (TESS-GRID), which it plans to progressively scale up to several thousand megawatt-hours of storage capacity.

TESS-GRID at this scale could supply many hours of dispatchable electricity with spinning reserves from its turbines, while offering a range of frequency control ancillary services (FCAS) to support grid stability. It could also buy and store electricity generated by other renewable energy projects on the regional high-voltage transmission network,  to strengthening firming services and earnings from market arbitrage.

“We will be using South Australian technology to create a large-scale, thermal energy storage plant near Port Augusta able to supply reliable power on demand to the national grid,” said Kevin Moriarty, executive chairman of 1414 Degrees.

The company will also use heat from TESS-GRID to power “smart farms,” as it looks into the production of hydrogen using excess heat from its turbines. Earlier this year, 1414 Degrees came together with a number of partners to identify and develop “smart farm” projects using its thermal energy storage solutions, which store electricity as thermal energy by heating and melting containers full of silicon.

The Aurora Solar Energy Project has South Australian government approval for a 70 MW solar array and a 150 MW CSP plant, so 1414 Degrees will need to vary or submit a new development application for its ambitious PV+TESS-GRID plans. The abandoned project was expected to cover 100% of the state government’s power needs, under a 20-year generation project agreement signed in 2017. SolarReserve’s bid at the time of $78/MWh was unexpectedly low for CSP, and it went on to win the government tender.

There are a number of reasons why 1414 Degrees decided to buy SolarReserve Australia II. “This project is currently not impacted by marginal loss factors (MLF) that have constrained output from renewable farms in remoter parts of the national grid,” Moriarty said. “We will reopen negotiations with OZ Minerals and ElectraNet as soon as the acquisition is complete.”

The AUD 2 million ($1.4 million) acquisition will be funded by the company’s cash reserves. It will avoid high capital requirements on the Aurora project by building in phases. It has also offered its 3,000+ shareholders the chance to directly invest in units of the Aurora Solar Energy Project, alongside institutional funds

“We’ve had a lot of interest from infrastructure and investment funds seeking to invest in the potential of our technology and this large solar farm will generate significant revenues while supporting the staged development of our large-scale energy storage technology,” Moriarty said.

Enertronica Santerno reports higher inverter shipments in 2019

In a short conversation with pv magazine, the company's CEO, Vito Nardi, said shipments for this year are expected to reach 866 MW. The inverter manufacturer also expects to reach 2 GW of annual production by the end of next year.

Inverter maker Elettronica Santerno, a former unit of Italian industrial group Carraro, recently changed its name to Enertronica Santerno, after it was acquired by Milan-based EPC service provider Enertronica.

“The new company is now Enertronica Santerno, listed on the Milan stock exchange, and represents the new holding company of the former Enertronica Group,” CEO Vito Nardi said in a recent chat with pv magazine. Enertronica acquired a majority stake in Elettronica Santerno in November 2016.

The new company will mainly focus on the production of solar inverters, and while the EPC business will no longer be a core part of the business, it will not be entirely discontinued. “Due to the experience acquired over the last few years by Enertronica Group, the new Enertronica Santerno will include a new ‘industrial services’ business for turnkey solutions, based on Enertronica Santerno’s products both for industrial automation and renewables,” Nardi explained.

The company recently reached  a weekly production rate of 40 MW, mainly due to increasing orders. “Our expectation is to reach a rate of production of 2 GW per year within 2021,” he said.

Nardi said Enertronica Santerno will capture about 6% to 8% of the central inverter market in 2019. This year, the company is expected to ship around 866 MW worldwide, versus just 126 MW last year, 133 MW in 2017, and 237 MW in 2016. It also plans to produce devices for the residential PV segment by the end of next year. “In the past, Santerno was an important player in this sector and we have over 30,000 inverters still operating after 10 years,” Nardi said.

When asked if the company also plans to produce string inverters for the large-scale solar business, Nardi said that the company believes that its centralized inverters will provide the best levelized cost of electricity on the market. It therefore does not plan to update its products for utility-scale applications.

The company may also open manufacturing facilities outside of Italy. “Considering the logistics costs and constraints in terms of local content and duties, Enertronica Santerno has the technical capability to open production facilities very quickly,” he said.  “We have done so in South Africa, under the condition that local market growth is sufficient enough to justify the initial investments.”

However, Nardi also said that the company believes that production in Italy offers a number of advantages. “Quality-wise, it can outweigh the disadvantage of local costs in terms of taxes and labor,” he concluded.

Enertronica Santerno has secured supply contracts from Italy, Vietnam, Latin America, South Africa and Jordan this year.

Survey Indicates Strong Support For Australian Carbon Dividend Plan

A UNSW Sydney community survey indicates strong support for a plan to tax carbon emissions, with the proceeds redistributed to Australians. But there may be a sting in its tail for renewables. The proposed Australian Carbon Dividend Plan (ACDP) would see the phasing in of a tax of $50 per metric ton of carbon dioxide […]
